Every writer I know has several ideas floating around in their heads. Sometimes, these ideas and characters keep me up throughout the night. One of the benefits of being in a critique group, teaching writing classes, and communicating with other writers online is that I get to bounce ideas around before I start writing.
In a spirit of collaboration, I’d like to hear your thoughts about these ideas and hear some ideas you’ve got bouncing around, too!
Hope – She’s a typical “Superwoman” who’s in love with a guy who has been stringing her along for the longest time. When he finally told her had something really important to ask her, she thought he was going to pop the question. Unfortunately, the “big question” was a request to borrow money. I got that idea from watching an episode of Judge Mathis. It was hilarious but sad. I think I’m gonna do a series with Hope eventually.
Rev. Brown – He’s a man who was married multiple times in the past. He has 3 daughters from those relationships (3 different mothers). He’s a changed man in Christ and he’s trying to reconcile with his daughters, but it’s not easy. The daughters are also struggling through life because they have Daddy issues. This idea is not necessarily “new” but I’ve been studying the orphan spirit in preparation for exploring this topic deeply through fiction. Not sure when it will happen, but it’s on my heart.
A Mean Prophetess – I’m still trying to figure out if she really is mean or if that’s what people think of her because she does what Old Testament prophets do—she warns people before destruction and they don’t like it. I still have to research this, though, because I’m not sure what New Testament prophets are called to do. Is it different now that believers have the Holy Spirit to teach us? How can she warn people without condemning them? Is she really a prophet or is she just a mean, judgmental person who needs to learn humility underneath that title?
Mama B # 6 – I think I’d like to see Mama B and Frank on a cruise or in some place other than their house. I’ve been thinking about making Mama B a sleuth (which is what happened with her Caucasian quasi-counterpart, Miss Julia), but I have to read up on that series to study the transition.
Blotted – this is a different genre (Fantasy? Sci-fi? Adventure?) This book is about teen who knows whose name has been blotted out of the Book of Life. I’ve got a few chapters already. My son liked it. This is his genre, so I’ll probably finish it soon, but I don’t think it will end up being a short story. I still need to find out if there’s a difference between the Book of Life and the Lamb’s Book of Life in scripture.
Historical Fiction – this one will probably be a short story, too. Late 1800s. An African-American girl who’s who is in training to become a midwife but she doesn’t want this destiny. Something goes wrong during the birth of a white woman’s baby…that’s where the trouble starts. This will probably be a short story, too.
Deon Jackson – this is an 8-year-old boy who has ADHD. The family dynamics change when his grandfather (who has Alzheimer’s) come to live with them. My son didn’t like it. But Tia McCollors’s son is reading my first few chapters to let me know if it’s remotely interesting.
[*Note – nothing I write ever turns out the way I plan it—and even if it did, no two writers would write the story identically. Every writer has his/her own voice, so I don’t worry about people “stealing” my ideas. What God has for me is for me.]
So…which idea piques your interest? Any suggestions? Are you a writer, too? Who’s dancing around in your head?
You know I love Mama B… But I also love the historical fiction story…
Those are my 2 faves!!
Love everything you write!
Vicki
Thanks, Vicki! I love historical fiction, too!
I pressed the link above & it took me to Stimpson.com, not your site!! Unless you are the world’s largest supplier of grommets & washers…

Uh oh! That’s sad! Also, Vicki, I know Santa is late – but he hasn’t forgotten you. I still have to mail stuff to my brother, too 😦
I like the character Hope. I’m thinking it would be a story where Hope eventually realizes that she is not an extension of a man.
I love Mama B! One thing I noticed about her is that she’s always taking someone into her home. If she and Frank goes on vacation, will she find someone to help there too?
Thanks, Mercedes, for chiming in! I like Hope – I felt so sorry for her! Oh, my writing group gave me some ideas tonight, too. You know Mama B is always helping others – maybe it’s time for someone to help her. But you know, people who are always helping others can be the hardest to help! We’ll see… 🙂
I am ready to see Mama B on that Cruise.
LOL! You know Mama B might not be happy about those folks in those bikinis – but she’ll be fine!
I’d read (almost) anything you’d write (not sure about sci-fi or fantasy; not my cup of tea). Oddly, I have an idea floating around for a character named Goodlowe Brown. But he’s not a preacher. I may explore that one as a novella. Are you gonna follow up on “I Met Him in the Ladies Room”? You left me hanging with Kerri and Stephanie!
Oooh! Goodlowe is a good name! I’ve been thinking about Kerri a lot, but I’m writing so much of what Kerri would say in another book right now, I don’t want to be redundant. If I do anything else with Kerri, it will be to let her fall in love with the church-boy 🙂
I love Mama B, so any new Mama B is good by me. I also was intrigued with Hope and Blotted. I would enjoy reading these as you get them finished. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Peggy, for sharing your thoughts – and for loving Mama B!
The story about Hope sounds super interesting to me because I’ve been there, done that. Stayed with a man for five years and by the time he wanted to get married I finally took the Lord’s advice that he wasn’t the one. Talk about being caught up in sin! Shoot, that’s another story in and of itself.
The one about Rev. Brown sounds like it would really minister to a lot of girls and women with Daddy issues, including me (see explanation re: Hope’s story). It’s a tender area for me, and one that God has been talking with me about for years. I’d be very interested in reading that one, especially since it’s coming from the father’s pov.
Lastly, the historical fiction one sounds good because I’ve recently started watching Call the Midwife on netflix, and the old practices of midwifery are fascinating in and of themselves. Add race dynamics too it and you’ve got a goldmine of a story. To me it sounds like this could definitely be a full length novel and possibly even a series!
I’m glad to know I’m not alone in being a writer with several stories running through my head. I’m not mature enough in my craft yet to actually work on more than one story at a time, but it’s good to know I’m in great company.
Faith, thanks for your thoughts! Now I have to go find “Call the Midwife” because that sounds like something I would really like!
Rev. Brown is a deep one. I’m a little hesitant to go there myself because it’s just such a sensitive issue. I’ll just follow His leading on it.
I can’t write on more than one book at a time, either. Just stick with one at a time and finish it 🙂
Anything Mama B, anyday!
Hmmm. Mama B as a sleuth does not compute with my perception of her as a fun loving, on the go, snazzy, God fearing lady, but who knows what could happen on a cruise where you are limited to the boundaries of the ship when it is at sea. That combination will likely slow anyone down to the point where they may become more sensitive to the happenings of their new environment which might be the beginning of her sleuthing endeavor (s).
Even more exciting is observing the transformation of Reverend Brown, father to three daughters from different women and his relationship (s) with both the mothers and daughters. The impact of his faith in God would be an enthralling twist.
Thanks for your thoughts! Mama B as a sleuth is still an idea…actually, I’ve got book #6 in my head. It still involves that cruise, but something different happens 🙂
So many are interested in Reverend Brown – I have to get to him very soon!!!
I, too, have many characters and story ideas constantly distracting me and keeping me up nights. I like all of your ideas, but I’d also love for you to write a post on how you organize these characters/stories. I tend to get the ideas out in my journal, but sometimes that’s not enough and I create a Scrivener file for them. Now I feel like I have so many separate ideas going that I can’t focus on any one thing, and I’m not being productive. I would love some tips or tricks, or how you handle all these ideas. Thanks for all you do Michelle!
You know me, whatever you write, I’ll like it. I just skimmed right past this because this could be potentially be a spoiler blog post LOL
