Mama B is temporarily housing her granddaughter Nikki and great-grandson Cameron while also trying to discern how to react to the less-than-biblical teachings of the interim pastor and his wife.
(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)
Plot and Setting: 5 — Plot has many unique elements and no major holes. Setting is clear, believable, and consistent. This is a real-life drama, and even if it is a bit larger-than-life, it’s still something that can be a lesson and a model for everyone who experiences something in church they don’t agree with.
Characters: 5 — Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. Even minor characters have depth. I so appreciate the depth in Mama B. She has faith in God, and she lives it in tangible ways, perpetually seeking to hear the Spirit and do what God would have her do. Her wisdom in dealing with her children and grandchildren is great. I like how she recognizes both the weaknesses and strengths of the people around her. Her wise and fair eyes give depth to many minor characters, but there are some (like Henrietta) who don’t seem to actually have depth.
Writing and Mechanics: 5 — Few, if any, typos or word errors. Intelligent use of 1st-person POV. Skillful writing that adds to the story. It’s written in Mama B’s voice, including plenty of vernacular. It took me a chapter or so to sink into that, but very quickly I was just hearing this wise woman speaking. 1st person is such a good choice for a story like this, where it’s crucial to understand the exact thoughts and motivations behind Mama B’s words and actions.
Redeeming Value: 5 — Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. It’s all about obeying the Spirit, seeking God in prayer, and letting God rule over our instincts and preferences. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all. We see or hear about some bad choices, but the negative consequences are clear.
Personal Enjoyment: 5 — I loved it. It made me feel in all the best ways, and leaves me content and satisfied. New favorite.

Mama B-A Time to Speak. This book was inspiring. I heard some good advice about when to speak and when to be quiet. Learning when it is the right time to speak up and tell someone what you are thinking can be hard. Mama B was put into some crazy situations where she had to call on Jesus to help her to decide whether she should say something to a person or just let the situation play out. Mama B knew her responsibility to her granddaughter and great grandson was important, but having them learn for themselves about which direction to go was just as important to them learning why God allows certain things to happen. This book is really good and gives a great message to all.

Beatrice “Mama B” Jackson is the warm, loving, compassionate church mother of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Though her husband has passed on, his work with Pastor Philips lives on through Mama’s B’s continued dedication to the church. In this installment, Pastor Philips takes a leave of absence to spend his wife’s last days with her. In the wake of his sabbatical, an interim pastor is brought into lead the flock, but he and his wife rub Mama B the wrong way. In the meantime, her house becomes a place of refuge to her estranged great-grandson and his mother who is fleeing a controlling boyfriend. How this woman in her seventies will juggle everyone else’s issues along with her full life will keep you turning pages until the end!
A Time to Speak by Michelle Stimpson was an awesome read. Mama B reminds me of the typical Christian grandmother that is serious about the Lord and extremely comical all in the same breath. I love her character and could not get enough! There are so many different life lessons embedded within the storyline, but what I appreciate is that even with all her wisdom, Mama B is learning as well. She is not one to act as if she has everything all together and has no problem admitting her own faults. I would recommend this title to all Christian fiction readers. This was such a refreshing title that I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, A Time to Dance.
